Hey folks, it's been a fascinating year of meeting new people, learning new things, and uhh.... that's really about it. But anymore may be asking too much anyway. I have met quite a few people who prioritize their lives in a horrible manner.

HERE ARE SOME PHOTOGRAPHS, YEAAAH

This is a photograph of my architectural model. It may seem impressive, but it is a B-. It's actually pretty poorly constructed- I'd say 3 of the objects look like they're redone, all the people models and sculptures are boring as well. But what can I say- I lack a lot of modeling tools that others have. I'm also lazy (I didn't want that lack of modeling tools thing to be my excuse).

Here's a close up shot.

And another shot of the rear from above.

Here's an illustration of the inside. This is a section perspective and a normal section, toned. I was proud of my tone work. I got a B+ I think. Which is very good- it's very close to an A. My standards have lowered after taking this class. Rest assured... I have gotten higher grades in my other classes (I think 3.5+ at the least, hopefully).

This is gyoza- aka dumplings. These are not cooked yet. Why I have these pictures after my architecture project is a big mystery; but I do what I want.

These are potstickers. Notice how I used different names to describe the same thing? I'm amazing. Or not. Same thing. Or not. These taste good so I uploaded the photos. When you order these at a restaurant they cost about $5 for like 6. It's stupid. If you make them yourself you can make about.... 80 for about $15. That's a LOT cheaper. If you would like me to do the math- 5/6 = $0.83 per dumpling at a restaurant. 15/80 = 0.1875 = $0.19 per dumpling. That's at least 75% off. Amazing! Of course it requires a lot of prepping an wrapping as well. Maybe an HOUR with 3 people. And this is 3 skilled people that are only mildly lazy. I would include a recipe but I am lazy. I apologize for this inconvenience. If you are "seriously" interested however, you may contact me at my email address caseyy@u.washington.edu.

For me, life is about education, food, doing what you want to do, hobbies, people, love, ideas, lasers, and uh... stuff. Stuff is definitely important.

I believe that nothing should be prioritized over school, education is a key element in achieving happiness in your future. If you don't believe me, you can go back to school when you're 40. It will be very sad and you will say, "I should've listened to Casey Yano." Of course I am dismissing IMMEDIATE priorities such as saving your life from a monster attack, skipping a week of school to give birth to a baby (if you happen to be pregnant) and many other things. But if you live in your parents' house and they're paying for your tuition... work should NOT be a higher priority in this case. Some of us are more unfortunate than others and don't have this privilege. Am I being preachy? Yes, yes I am. But if you're going to acknowledge anything I say/write this year- it should be this. If you're not learning what you want to, you need to rethink what you're doing. No one should control your LIFE, and doing work you don't want to in your long life will only make you depressed. Depression is bad.

This is the East (?) entrance. This is where we were supposed to enter the Japanese garden. Unfortunately, the road was too close to the door. This means that it's too loud and such... therefore it wouldn't be very Zen.

Here's a path to the garden. It's delightfully ugly. Do you know why? There shouldn't be those borders along the path... There should be nothing in-between yourself and nature. This is a modified Japanese garden though.

Here is another path in the garden. There is no border in this one; it's very good. In fact, it's so good that our guide is holding his hand up and absorbing power from the space. I'm just kidding. Or am I?

This is a very good view of the garden. Though it's not ALL of the garden. It's the water part. There's a lot of meanings in the placement of objects and such. Buddhism says that objects aren't supposed to be iconic, so I will not list any meanings. It's all about how you experience the space.

This is a teahouse near the entrance of the garden. The floor around the teahouse is comprised mostly of moss. Why? I forgot. But surely you can look it up if your life depended on it (which it does, of course).

These fish live a long time... They are called Koi. I think... The shoe in the photo is actually NOT my shoe. This is very strange.

Anyhow here's some beautiful art. if you love it a lot you should go and buy it. Artists are generally broke.

Here's a uh, I dunno. I don't know what kind of art this is... but the patterns are full of so much... detail. I wanted to use the word ornate but detail means ornate so I couldn't. There goes my chance to seem sophisticated. Whatever.

Simple stuff is cool too. This is cool. So very cool.
I keep a wishlist called "Things I'd buy if I were rich" and things like this are on it... I don't know where I'd put all this art though. Maybe I'll put them all over the walls and ceiling. Every time I look around I would be inspired with tons of fresh art and innovation... Oh but to have a room like that would cost a fortune as a print can cost anywhere from $30 - infinite.

Sigh...

Next week there will be a post on philosophy and making the world a better place. It will be very exciting for you to read my opinionated views. I'm just kidding. Maybe. How does one know they're blind? And even if I wasn't- what if you are blind? Then you'll think that I am blind. There is no winner.

It would seem I have found my camera. It is in good shape. I think I will go take pictures when it is sunny. My sentence structure is so plain. It is boring. But it is grammatically correct.

Tomorrow I have a field trip to Pike Place. And by field trip I actually meant that I get to draw diagrams of Pike Place Market and how the people walk in and out of the place. Then I need to pick an interesting spot and draw 4 perspective drawings 3 x 4 on a 15 x 20 illustration board all in pen so I can't screw up. Isn't that exciting? I probably won't enjoy two seconds of Pike Place goodness. I'll buy donuts though; I can't resist them. If you don't know where Pike Place Market is... Google it. I'm kidding (kind of). It's the directory of merchants and such in Seattle. It's a big deal; if you didn't know about it... then you're strange.

Since I don't need to finish my entire project just tomorrow- I think I may have an opportunity to take pictures and such. It will be cool. I'll probably spend Sunday there too- just so I can get more work in.

I think this is my second post this quarter and quite frankly it is already midterms. I know it is midterms because I have already taken two. Did I forget to write something last week? I am utterly confused. How can time fly by so fast? Let me check the date on the last post.... April 20. Okay so it's 9 days from then- That's odd... I guess I started late, and time is like- crazy.

Anywho, I have been doing some very interesting perspective drawing in my Design Drawing class. The process is so complicated that I don't want to explain it. Instead I will post a link to a tutorial.
This is that link: http://www.khulsey.com/perspective_2pt.html
This is a good tutorial... I wish I found it before I did my project.
It's too late. Now I'm onto light and light boxes with alphabet blocks, ping pong balls, and poker cards. This would make a lot of sense if I took a photography of my lightbox. But I can't. Because my camera is probably lost under one of these pile of papers. So much paper... I apologize to the god of trees. If there is one. There isn't? Well too bad- now there is. And I apologize to you, sir... ma'am?

Recently I have been reading the newspaper because I can multi task. This is because I need to chew while I eat. This chewing is not very hard and doesn't require my full and undivided attention, which lets me read the newspaper at the same time. The news seems to be littered with scary news. Rapists and 11 year olds, violence from video games, creator of LSD, things like that are all big topics in the newspaper. We live in a very scary world, is it really necessary to put such topics in the newspaper? How will this affect children? I can just imagine a 8 year old kid asking mommy, "What does LSD, rape, and murder stand for?"

Oh my.

Anyhow, that is just a question I was thinking after I watched Kill Bill vol. 1 and vol. 2. Because the Bride (Uma Thurman) was all, "I wanted to raise my child in a good environment." Because she's a hitma- er hitwoman and she found out she was pregnant and it was like- Oh noes! I can't have a baby and kill people at the same time! That is clearly wrong. And Bill was like, "How dare you run away and marry some prick in some safe environment and be pregnant and stuff!" So Bill, being the psycho boyfriend shoots her in the face and she dies... But! She lives (This isn't a spoiler as it's the first 2 minutes of the film) and so it's like- grr revenge, and that's the movie.

It was a very movietastic weekend for me. I saw Juno- yet another pregnant woman having a baby in a scary environment (Juno is 16). What a coincidence! It's as if they're the same movie! (of course not). Juno was more... indie-film-like. The movie is uh, good? Well it's kinda bad.... but it's good. Kind of. That makes no sense at all, I know- just see it for yourself.

I also saw Rain Man and Thank You for Smoking. That's 5 movies already- that's like 8 hours of my life staring at a screen, is that really healthy? Well it's probably healthier than typing about it. Once again I apologize for my lack of pretty pictures.

Is here. Yep, Spring Quarter 2008.

How was Spring Break? Too short? I too believe the same. In fact it was so short that one of my textbooks didn't arrive in time and I was forced to borrow it from the library to work on one of my assignments.

Wow that was great; I started my blog by complaining about how terrible our quarter system is set up. Oops. I am just kidding of course- it's not that bad... if you have the money to buy a brand spanking new version of your textbook from your bookstore. It's not like I saved 60% or more by purchasing my textbooks on the internet or something. No way- that is simply ludicrous.

One time I bought a used book it reeked of cigarettes. If you smoke that's not a big deal. But if you happen to have a chronic illness in the lungs... then it's quite serious. Maybe, probably, definitely.

Currently I am taking a class on Asian cultures and a class on philosophy and religion. The other class is over at Seattle- Design Drawing II. If it is anything like Design Drawing I, my life will be a mess.

Where is my camera? Where is my cameraaaaa- to be continued.

So my big project is done and now I'm just studying for finals and such.

a game for Nintendo's newest game console was released on like March 9th or so. The game is called Super Smash Brothers Brawl (weird name for a game) and it's a sequel to one of the very few games I enjoyed playing. It is good- except it's not super good. It's just good.

I am kind of pondering what classes I should take next quarter and basically I have no choice but to pick early monday and wednesday classes and maybe an early tues and thursday class. I want to take Design Drawing II (even though though Design Drawing I almost killed me) and so I need to make a few sacrifices in selecting my classes because of this class. This is one of the classes required for the ARCH program over at the Seattle campus and it probably builds upon the fundamentals of Design Drawing- which goes up to like Design Drawing V if I remember properly.

Anyhow, I recommend taking classes by STEVE COLLINS because he is such an interesting guy and he has a great passion for the topics that he teaches. He brings in examples to class to help us better understand and when the textbook sucks he tries very hard to come up with his own explanations.

I'm learning about electromagnetic fields and radioactive decay and such. super fascinating really

I have some projects and I have some papers and I have some homeworks.

Design Drawing I:
This course is so very busy and hard. Why we need to learn all the basics in this time is just... no. After all the hard stuff though I am now on perspective drawings! These don't require precise measurements and that makes me happy as a bunny with a pancake on his head (see picture). This actually isn't a pancake... it's a dorayaki (kind of like a hoho except a non-chocolate cake with sweet red bean filling. But the internet created a macro and they called it a pancake... and they were wrong. They will continue to be wrong, forever.
<no image because I was too busy, sorry> Just type in pancake bunny in google.

Electricity and Invention:
It's starting to get complicated. It's kind of like history and electrical engineering put together. It's very useful because we live an age of technology... and I like technology so I think it's important.

Intro to Journalism:
I had to drop this course because I was too busy with Design Drawing I. This is a good course though, the teacher is a nice guy and the basics of journalisming is all there. All those facts that can keep you from being sued and that is important because when you face the law, you normally face bankruptcy- or worse.

These are English pancakes. They are the same as German pancakes. some orange marmalade with them.

In Europe, I assume they are called pancakes... not English pancakes. Just like how in Canada, ham is called bacon. I wonder if bacon is called American bacon in Canada.

I made some tacos as well. They were good. Ground beef with half an onion, chili powder, and some cumin. Avocados with some lime juice, some onion, salt, and pepper. Salsa bought at a store, sour cream, small tortillas, and some lettuce. I forgot to put cheese on this taco...

I had a friend who always had tacos. He made his tacos in a much different way. A lot more chili powder and a lot of cheddar. Good times.

Anyone can make their own kind of taco... Some people don't like guacamole, some people don't like sour cream. Since you can choose what you put in a taco, I guess it makes tacos very flexible. I put a bit of everything... and in the picture, all the ground beef is covered up so it looks like a vegetaco of sorts.

This is called Okonomiyaki. It's very popular in Osaka, Japan. It's like a pancake made of cabbage, flour, and water. Inside there is usually ginger, pork, and green onions. On top are small pieces of sliced dried bonito and the green are seaweed flakes. The sauce is made of mayonnaise and a sweeter version of Worcestershire sauce. For some reason I think this dish might look a little... different.

This is some pasta. Turkey breast, large thin slices of tomatoes and zucchini, onions, etc etc etc.

Everything comes with rice in Japan. That is all.

Some tonkatsu (pork with a breaded batter that is fried). These descriptions aren't too great... you could type in tonkatsu in google and find out what it is though. Why I don't do this and then post it... is a mystery (or I'm lazy).

Here's some broccoli that's fried. I'm not a big fan of broccoli, but when it's fried this way, it's delicious. Seriously.

Remember that sweet Worcestershire sauce I mentioned earlier? It's normally used with tonkatsu and it's eaten with cabbage.

Alright I think that's about it for now, I apologize for the poor lighting, I was hungry.

But then my internet died, and I lost it. This is kinda sad. My internet is being moody. After it settles down I will write a blog post that is very similar to the one I intended to write and a post with lots of photographs of food because it has been very chef-tastic in my life lately.

SO! It seems that my classes are rather... busy these days.I missed a class because I didn't sleep the previous day and now I've been measuring buildings with group members. At the Bothell campus the buildings look and function in a modern way but at the Seattle campus.... not so much. There is a lot of Gothic influence on the buildings and that makes the buildings much harder to draw out.

This is a drawing and measurements of what looks to be a bracket... more like a fake bracket because it doesn't really support anything. It seems like it's there for aesthetics. Which means that it's probably not a bracket; but something else that I don't know the term for.

The plan drawings that we are currently drawing out take a long long time to do and the samples that they showed us look amazing.

My other class is electricity and inventions and my midterm and take home exam are both due on Monday so I must cut this blog short. Hey it's almost Valentine's Day- that is fabulous. It's either wonderful or horrible so I'm not going to really comment on it. What I will comment on, however, is that these chocolates look pretty amazing. These are handmade chocolates from Godiva. They go for around $95. Is that too much? Maybe. Probably.

Hey folks, it would seem I forgot my password, which is why I couldn't update on Saturday. Fortunately I found it this morning and so here I am typing this.

So this awesome class which I need to do homework for, Intro to Journalism, is quite useful for anybody planning on write anything public (like I am doing right now). The textbook we use, Journalism: who, what, when, where, why and how , is about how to write stuff without getting sued. Of course I am kidding, there is a lot more depth than that. But to find out what those things are you should purchase the book because it's better at explaining Journalism than I am. This is probably because it has a bit more text than this blog entry.

So back to explaining why the class is so awesome. Our class is set up in a very interesting way. It is not a "follow the textbook" type of course. Our professor, David S. Goldstein Ph.D. lets us discuss and ponder the many details that go into journalism and he explains the many little things that he has picked up upon his journalisming adventures as well. Apparently I need to Xerox three copies of my article for tomorrow as some peers will critique it and stuff. It's going to be fun. Did you notice how I capitalized Xerox? Yeah, you need to capitalize Xerox, Xeroxed, Xeroxing, and Xeroxified (this last one... not so sure).

So for those who believe that you can "say whatever the hell you want" in a written publication I will warn you that it is not true because you are not allowed lower the reputation of other people and such. I am not a big fan of suing and won't really sue someone because of an insult, but it's good to know that having your reputation damaged by lies is sue-able material. I've been kind of writing quickly and rewriting sentences and such so I apologize if some of this made no sense.

Thanks for reading, and hooray for education and educated minds.

I believe there are infinite little things in this world that are fascinating. We pick out these little things and they can define us. I am talking about little activities and hobbies. I have them too. In fact I feel like listing some of these little things and explain why I, Casey Yano, find these things amusing. Let's get this list started shall we... alphabetical too:

Billiards - This is that game where you hit these balls into pockets with a stick. It gives you a better understanding of the interaction between objects on the simplest scale. It requires concentration and strategy. This game can be played by anyone because it doesn't require any strength though being taller may give you a very slight advantage since it's hard to reach some places at times.

Guitar Hero - This is a game. I don't play much games. I used to, but now... not so much. What I look for in new games are very interesting control schemes and game play mechanics because new and interesting concepts feel new and interesting to me. Guitar Hero is a game played on a controller that is shaped like a guitar. I played maybe 15 hours total but I must say that it is great fun because you can play some nice songs on a plastic guitar and it makes you feel good. It does - it's not stupid. It's cool. It really is. It's a big costly if you don't have a game console though (as I have a PS2 from way back when).

Illustration Books - You know those books with lots of colorful pictures of whatever is interesting? I really don't find much illustration books in houses of my friends. Mostly schools and libraries. I guess it doesn't seem like a book to buy. They are wonderful books to buy. Especially if you spend a lot of time on computers and you have to wait for a program to load or something. Basically, having a book with pictures nearby is handy because they're nice to look at and they don't require memorization of anything. Therefore you can buy an illustration book and you keep it on your desk. Whenever you have one of those "Oh I need to wait... " moments you can flip through the book to progress through the boredom that is waiting. I recommend a book full of puppies. But that may not be your thing. It's what I read while I wait for my slow internet connection to rebuild this website once I publish this blog.

There are a lot more things like rock climbing, snowboarding, and cooking. There are some less obvious ones too like organizing your ideas in a notepad or collecting something, and whatever makes you happy. I'm sure there are great little things that I don't know about. If you feel the need to share you should send them to me or something. That would be pretty cool. Really. I'm a normal human being. I will get your email if you send it. caseyy AT u.washington DOT edu

yep.
